Search the KvK register to check if the company is legally registered in the Netherlands. No KvK? Then there’s no legal base in the country: big red flag.
Check the site using an independent scam checker, such as Scamadvisor.
Look for the padlock in your browser’s address bar. A secure website starts with https:// — not http://. Without encryption, your data may be at risk.
Is there a visible contact page with an address, email, or phone number? Or do you have to hunt for a vague form?
Some sites show listings you can only access after paying. Use this free tool to check whether that property is available elsewhere for free.
Scam sites often get negative reviews, shut down, and then relaunch under a new name. If a site has fewer than 500 reviews, or all the reviews are vague and customer-service related: be cautious.
The Dutch rental market is unique. Trusted sites like Funda and Pararius only operate in the Netherlands. If a site is active in 30+ countries, chances are it offers low-quality service.
Ask friends, family, or check forums like Reddit. First-hand experiences are often more reliable than polished reviews.
Has it been mentioned in news articles or interviews with founders? Coverage in Het Parool, De Telegraaf, or Radar usually means the site is well-established; more so than a flashy social media ad.
You’d think scammers would run a spellcheck; but often, they don’t. Lots of spelling or grammar errors? Stay away.
Do they clearly explain pricing and the business model? Or are you asked to pay without knowing why? If listings are locked behind a paywall without explanation, that’s suspicious.
